Slowly Moving North

Image
We said goodbye to George Town today and all the fun times and fun people! We stayed a month and it is easy to stay here with all the events and activities. We had water aerobics, yoga and beach get-togethers as well as lots of swimming and trail walking. There were many other activities depending on your interests. Lise did ukulele lessons and Steve played volleyball.  Yesterday we did a big grocery shop but no bread. It’s hit and  miss what will be in stock. There hasn’t been any plain yogurt on the shelf for a few weeks now so we are eating oatmeal for breakfast every day. I also got my haircut at a shop that does hair and sells fish. It turns out that the owner’s husband is a fisherman and they sell whatever he happens to catch that day. We had a craving for ice cream but there are no ice cream shops in town and our freezer is full, so we took a couple of spoons to town, bought a tub of ice cream at the grocery store and ate it on the spot. We celebrated Steve’s birt...

Paradise Continued

Image
It looks like a city, but it is all the boats at anchor with their anchor lights on.  The days seem to slip away and all of a sudden another week has gone by here in George Town, The week started with another front of strong winds but this time they didn’t last as long, so maybe they are settling down - in length and a bit in strength. A couple of nights of interrupted sleep was not too bad. We watched this small boat behind us toss and turn - a young couple with a dog. How did they sleep? We experienced rain on and off for a couple of days and some beautiful rainbows. In the first picture Gaya is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! When the weather turns good again, cruisers like to gather for a bonfire, drinks and snacks on the beach, We have enjoyed s full moon this week - a couple of times I have awoken with the bright moonlight shining through the hatch above our bed. Today was very calm - perfect for snorkelling and good conversation under the tiki shelter. Gunter and ...

A Week of Celebrations

Image
The week coming up includes Valentine’s Day, both of our daughters’ birthdays and my sister’s birthday. Lots to celebrate! Here in George Town, Gunter and I decided it was time to try some fitness classes run by cruiser volunteers. We both went to water aerobics in the ocean just off the beach near us - no picture as it was in the water! I went to a yoga class on the beach - talk about relaxing - lying on the sand and listening to the waves. On one of our walks, we couldn’t believe we had this beach to ourselves. We had a couple of very calm days which is unusual for the Bahamas - the calm before the storm. There has been some rain but it comes and goes so quickly - never hangs around all day and it is still warm. Steve and Lise returned to the harbour yesterday. The harbour is packed with boats as there is another front arriving tomorrow with winds out of the north expected. Here we go again - hopefully by the end of the month the fronts will be fewer and shorter as Spring comes ...

Drama in the Harbour

Image
It started off as a quiet morning - we waved goodbye to Steve and Lise who decided to go to Conception Island for a couple of days, returning on Saturday. We watched some young boys sailing in their dingy; I baked some muffins for a mid-morning snack - some burnt bottoms as a propane stove does not heat consistently. Then I looked behind us and asked Gunter if he remembered a catamaran being that close. Suddenly we realized that it was dragging (the anchor had let go) and was drifting straight towards us on a collision course. The owners were not on board but someone radioed the community as to what was happening and within a minute a flotilla of dingys arrived to fend the boat away from us - at one point there was only a dingy between us and the catamaran. The owners were found, arrived, raised their anchor and reset it with a lot more chain. What an amazing community of boaters! Whew - now we could relax and carry on our day. Doesn’t this rock look like a lion or cat? At the end...

Staying Put

Image
We can’t believe we have been anchored here for 2 weeks, but as I’ve said before weather dictates everything. As it is calming down and the wind is shifting, we are planning to leave on Wednesday and head to Long Island next. Guessing there used to be a Scotiabank here in town? Here we are in the dingy leaving town and prepared for a wet ride across the bay - Gunter got soaked- the waves were pounding on his side of the dingy. On Saturday morning, the cruiser community held an event called “Treasures of the Bilge” which was essentially a garage sale with most of the stuff free to a good home. I managed to offload about a dozen books and picked up another bunch and Gunter snagged an extension for our power cord - only needed in marinas but nice to have. The guys got invited to go fishing the same day while Lise took me to a local snorkelling spot. One of the Snappers - so fresh and yummy. As a contrast, here is our grandson ice fishing at home. One of the trails on the island is an...
