Little Bay

First of all a big thank you to our friend Lise who painted this picture of our boat- what talent! We love it.


We arrived in Little Bay on Wednesday. It is a nice anchorage protected on all sides except the west. Luckily west winds don’t come along very often as the prevailing winds are typically from the east. What a beautiful spot!


It feels very secluded but is only a short dingy ride around the point to Black Point Settlement where we can pick up some provisions if needed.  We took our dingys there for lunch and a stroll through town.

We met the town police officer who gave us a tour of the old jail. He said it was only ever used for drunks to sleep it off.  The island is small and there is no crime - disputes are handled by mediation.

In the evening we went to the beach to watch the sunset.





This castle is a local landmark (even shows up on the chart) although it is boarded up. There is a boat washed up on the beach in front of the castle. Although there are warnings of security cameras, you can walk around the grounds.





We are anchored in front of this pink house which also seems to be unoccupied and it is for sale.



Gunter and I decided to take a walk around this area in front of the anchorage but it was very disappointing. The roads are partially completed - perhaps for housing or a resort that never got built?

Mother Nature has confined us to the boat so far this weekend. Once again a front has northeast winds howling all day and night. Nobody gets a good sleep worrying about the anchor holding but fingers crossed our anchor has been very reliable for us. The weather patterns often follow what is happening in the states and Canada although it never has gotten cold here during a “cold” front. Even in the Bahamas Alberta Clippers get blamed! We decided it was a good opportunity to give the interior of the boat a good cleaning. Maybe by Monday things will settle down and we can start planning the next leg of this journey.

Here is the beginning of our story... Gunter and I had been sailing our boat "Spirit" on Lake Ontario out of Fifty Point Marina for the past 11 years.  With my retirement looming, we made the decision to sell her and purchase a bigger boat in Florida so that we could join our friends Steve and Lise ("Gaya") and sail to the Bahamas in the winters. Spirit went to her new owners in July 2019 and we started looking in earnest.  Our first trip to Florida at the end of July solidified our plan to look for a Beneteau 393 (just under 40' in length), but we came home without a purchase.  Through some fortuitous circumstances we were able to connect with a Canadian couple who had decided to sell their boat after spending 16 years sailing to the Bahamas.  We travelled back to Florida before Christmas to meet them and make a deal! Manjack Cay

 Said goodbye to Green Turtle Cay today. The winds have been wild the last few days here but we have still managed to explore the island and get some beach time. Sitting under this palm tree for shade, hoping the coconuts don’t fall. Cats waiting  for a ride: Gunter and I waiting for fresh food to be unloaded and delivered to the grocery store so we can load up the fridge. Sporting our Fifty Point Yacht Club gear and celebrating our last dinner out at the Tranquil Turtle. Hung up our Fifty Point burgee at the Green Turtle Yacht Club. Boaters have been doing this for years - if you don’t have a flag, you sign and put up a dollar bill. We are on the homestretch now - a few more short hops in the Abacos before we cross back to Florida. Today we travelled 1 hour to Manjack Cay. This is an isolated anchorage with no marina, stores, restaurants or small boats - only a few private homes on the island.  Totally different than the last week. Daytona, Florida

When we left Fort Pierce on Wednesday we had a plan to get to St. Augustine before the weekend. Of course Mother Nature had other plans - why do we always forget this? The first day was very pleasant as we travelled up the ICW. Sunken abandoned boats are very common along the waterways unfortunately, contrasting with Florida mansions. These little beaches will be packed with boaters on the weekend. We made it to an anchorage near the town of Cocoa Beach. The wind changed direction in the middle of the night and the next day was rough with northeast winds and current slowing our progress. We stopped in New Smyrna Beach at a marina for the night. First time in this town - it has a lot of Art Deco architecture being revived in the downtown area. On Friday we had a short hop to a marina in Daytona. We plan to stay for the weekend to avoid crazy boat traffic on the ICW.  One of the dock hands offered to drive us to the grocery store as he lived in that area. What luxury! Huge selection ...
