On January 1st we left West End and headed around the corner of Grand Bahama Island to Lucaya which is a small port south of Freeport. The wind was blowing and the waves were 6’ and we were heading into the wind so it was a rocky trip. As we turned towards Lucaya we were able to put up the headsail which helped reduce the impact of the waves. First time having a sail out although we were still motoring too.
This trip was about 6 hours but as we got closer to our destination, we were unable to roll/furl the sail back in around the forestay. The only solution was to pull the sail down and poor Gunter had to go out on deck in very rolly conditions to do this and secure the sail so it wouldn’t fall overboard.
We arrived at the Grand Bahama Yacht Club and first thing Steve helped us get the sail back up and untangled.
In the process my sunglasses went flying overboard which meant a swim for me to retrieve them from the bottom. Luckily the water is very clear and it was low tide so I didn’t have to go far.
A nice swim and dinner at the outdoor bar helped us recover from a stressful day.
We have ended up staying an extra 4 days waiting for a weather window for a long passage. This is a lovely place to be so we’re not unhappy about sticking around.
Meals on board are always delicious with Gunter in the galley. There is a new grocery store here which is great for replenishing our fresh food.
Tomorrow is another 4 am start so we can get to the Berry Islands before dark. Here’s a tough map of the island groupings in the Bahamas.
