Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park

I haven’t posted for awhile because we have had limited cell service in this beautiful natural area of the Bahamas. Interesting being disconnected from the world….

We left Allen’s Cay on Monday Jan 10 at 7 am - only problem was the anchor would not come up. There was something wrong with the windlass - the motor that controls the lowering and raising of the anchor. Steve and Lise had already left but Gunter took the dingy to fetch Steve and both of them pulled the anchor up by hand so we could get going. Luckily the park has mooring balls so we could tie up when we arrived.

What a breathtaking site greeted us at Warderick Wells island in the northern part of the park. Stunning! The park is an ecological reserve with a great diversity of plants, coral and animals. On our first day we saw sea turtles, nurse sharks and sea rays - there is no fishing or hunting allowed.

The guys got right to work - Steve took apart the windless completely, cleaned the insides and put it back together again - a 3 hour job but it works!
The rest of the week was a whirlwind of hiking on the island, dingy rides, snorkelling and boat work.

That’s Gunter bailing out the dingy after a night of wind, rain, thunder and lightening. That’s why we stayed for a week - nice days followed by bad weather days - tied up to a secure mooring ball is a nice safe place to be.

Today we finally moved to the southern end of the park to Cambridge Cay - it turns out that more weather is expected so we may stay on the mooring ball here for a few days. Time to go exploring!
