Never Try to Stick to a Schedule While Boating!
We left Green Cove Springs bright and early as the sun was rising on Saturday December 18th.
We tucked into an inlet off the main traffic lanes beside Blount Island and set the anchor for the night. We saw our first dolphins of the season and lots of small boat traffic since it was the weekend. Some of these guys think it is fun to drive fast close to us and then watch as our boat rolls back and forth from the wake. Is it coincidence that these boats were flying Trump 2024 flags?! Luckily night comes early this time of year and it was quiet once it got dark. We had a beautiful sunset on the port side of the boat and moon rise on the starboard side.
On Sunday we started south down the ICW and arrived in St. Augustine in good time. Here we are tied up to a mooring ball owned by the city marina in the harbour - a great location.
Unfortunately , a storm was coming and it hit with a vengeance Sunday night - northeast winds, waves and current. Sun Spirit was bouncing all night and the morning didn’t look any better. At first the marina was not going to let us stay as they had many reservations, but a lot of these cancelled due to the weather which meant we could stay.
We managed to lower the dingy and have a good walk around town on Monday after a wet and wild ride to the dock. We stayed away from anything indoors because of Covid and were some of the few people with our masks on outdoors. We tried to visit the fountain of youth that Ponce deLeon was searching for when he landed here in 1513, but you had to pay so we will not benefit from a sip of the water.
This boat (not ours so don’t worry) was washed up to shore after hurricane-type winds last month. It is common to see derelict and abandoned boats throughout Florida. The locals are not pleased with these, understandingly, and as a result some jurisdictions have restricted or forbidden anchoring.
great to see you on the move and staying warm! Happy holidays to both of you and enjoy!
